Do GMO’s Deserve the Bad Rep that they’ve Been Getting?
Ever since companies
first began using GMO’s in their products, the public has been quick to
criticize their use. Criticism has come from concerned parents, food lovers and
the health conscious who are worried about the impact that GMO’s will have on
their bodies.
But research has
shown that although GMOs’ have a bad reputation, they probably do not deserve it.
The National Academy of Sciences released a comprehensive report in May that
stated GMO’s were just as safe to consume as their non-GMO counterparts.
The committee did not
find that GMOs lead to a spike in health problems such as autism, obesity,
cancer or kidney disease. It also claimed that GMO’s in our food supply do not
increase food allergies; affect GI tract or risk horizontal gene transfer,
which is the process of genetic material from one organism moving into another
cell.
In fact, the report
concludes that GMO and non-GMO crops with an increased concentration of
particular nutrients could lead to “favorable effect on the health of millions
of people”
Despite the fact that
GMO’s remain a controversial subject with the public, scientist and food
experts have given their confirmation that GMO’s are in fact safe for everyone
to consume and enjoy!
